Basic Chicken Workshop Content

11.00am - Chicks and Broody pens - lets start easy! There will be the opportunity to handle chicks and watch any hatching birds (when possible). We'll also cover bedding, feed, water, crumb and vitamin supplements for chicks.

11.30am - Handling larger birds and adults. How to handle, pick up, check for health and injury. An introduction to lice, fleas and mites (nice huh!). Egg laying, broodiness and nesting. Bedding, perching and sleeping habits. You'll have the opportunity to see how to make perches etc. from natural materials so you can customise your own garden.

12.30am - Fencing, Shelter, Predators and Security (This is Phils bit)

Unlike many businesses I wont try to sell you everything! Although I can recommend some places to purchase things like fencing and sheds etc.

1.45pm - Let's have a break for coffee and cake!

2.00pm - What Breeds' Best for you... an opportunity to discuss different breeds, find out what your requrements are, and what types of poultry best suit you.

2.30pm Q and A, Kitchen Scraps and Dispatchng

After many requests by customers we have now decided to run some practical poultry keeping classes. The purpose of which will be two-fold.

1. If you're buying birds as someone new to poultry keeping, it will offer some great advise and practical skills that you require. Now, it is by no means a necessity to attend a class in order to keep birds, but I have been asked by customers, both old and new if I'd run them. Techniques and practises change so it's a good class for oldies as well as newbies :-)

2. The other point of the class will basically determine whether you actually WANT to keep chickens! I would rather someone did the class and then decided "actually, no - that's not for me" than buying birds and not enjoying them - happy and confident owners have happy and confident birds!

And of course you'll be able to buy / order birds at the end of the class.

The course will follow a semi-structured content, but I am happy to go over things more than once if you're unsure, or add extra bits if you have varied questions. I like being put on the spot :-)

There will also be the opportunity - not always but quite often - for the more practical poultry keeper to dispatch (yes, kill) a bird. It's a bit grim putting it on a chicken course I know, but we sell meat birds and sometimes you may have an injured bird.... this will be done at the end when only those who are interested are around. Don't want to terrify!

I will also run through a quick kitchen bit - time allowing just to demonstrate the types of foods you can prepare for your birds from your left over scraps - chickens make excellent recyclers, and if you put in good food, you'll get out good eggs!
